DirectDVD MPEG2 Encoder - High-quality audio/video compression format developed by the Motion Picture Experts Group using perceptual coding and predictive technologies similar to MPEG-1 but including a higher bit-rate and more control over the compression and technology. MPEG-2 features a bit-rate of 3.5 to 10 megabits per second versus MPEG-1’s 1.5 megabits per second. The MPEG-2 format can be used to provide very high-quality images and is used with DVD, DBS (direct broadcast satellite) and HDTV (in a modified high-resolution format).
DirectDVD compression uses perceptual coding to eliminate data that cannot be perceived (or is difficult to perceive) by human senses. MPEG-2 also uses predictive technologies to interpret information that does not change between frames and recreate if in multiple frames while only recording it one time. For instance, if the door in a room is not opened and nothing moves in front of it, that image remains the same for multiple frames. The MPEG-2 compression technique looks first at a starting frame and then at an ending frame skipping several frames in between. Data that is the same from the starting to the ending frame (like the door) is only recorded and decoded once. That part of the starting frame is also used in the ending frame and all those in between. This is very similar to copying and pasting in a word processor; the same information is used multiple times so it does not need to be recreated each time.
